Rucksack oder Tasche, das ist hier die Frage! | Bag or backpack, that’s the question here!

Bist du ein Rucksack-Mensch? Ich nicht. Rucksäcke kommen bei mir (seit Beenden meiner Schulzeit) nur noch auf Wandertouren zum Einsatz, dann natürlich in funktionaler (wenig stylischer) Form. Im Alltag bin ich eher der Große-Tasche-quer-über-Schulter-Typ. Mein Rücken ist da aber kein Fan von. Wann immer ich längere Zeit damit rumlaufe, zum Bummeln am Wochenende oder während Städtetouren, tut mir der Rücken weh. Meiner Meinung nach ist den Mann die Tasche tragen zu lassen auf gar keinen Fall die Lösung; er tut das zwar meistens irgendwann, wenn mit der Rücken so doll weh tut, dass ich mich nicht mehr wehren kann will, aber wieso sollte er dafür leiden, dass ich so viel Zeug mitschleppen möchte?! Also musste für den schon so oft erwähnten London-Trip eine andere Lösung her. Auftritt: Cooper von Colette Patterns.

Are you a backpack fan? I’m not. Since finishing school I use backpacks only while hiking, then of course a functional (not very stylish) one. In everyday life, I‘m more of a big-bag-cross-over-shoulder-type. But my back doesn’t like that as much as I do. When ever I’m on a longer tour, strolling around the city at the weekends or while exploring a new city, my back hurts. In my opinion it’s no selution at all to let monsieur carrying my bag; he does it sometimes, when my back hurts that much that I can’t won’t fight it anymore, but I don’t see why he should suffer just because I want to lug all this stuff with me?! So I needed a different solution for the very often mentioned upcomming trip to London. Enter: Cooper by Colette Patterns.

Da ein Rucksack aus den oben beschriebenen Gründen bei mir aber nur selten zum Einsatz käme wollte ich etwas, das Rucksack und Tasche zugleich sein kann, und zwar wirklich. Soll heißen, ich wollte keinen Rucksack, der zwar als Tasche funktioniert, aber eher eine schlechte Figur macht und/oder andersrum. Meine Internet-Recherche nach RTW-Taschen/Rucksächen hat ergeben, dass es tatsächlich ein Modell eines bekannten Hersteller gibt, dass diese Anforderung erfüllen könnte. Also bin ich mit festen Kaufabsichten in einen Laden gelaufen, hab das Teil anprobiert und war enttäuscht. Der Rucksack war viel zu klein (für meine Bedürfnisse) und mit ihm auf dem Rücken sah ich aus wie ein Grundschulkind. Mist! Accessoires nähen ist eigentlich nicht mein Ding, aber nun hatte ich keine Wahl mehr. Als einziges mögliches Schnittmuster, das meine Anforderungen erfüllen könnte, kam mir Cooper in den Sinn. Und da die Lösung, mit der die oben erwähnte fertige Tasche sich von Schultertasche zu Rucksack verwandeln lässt, mir ziemlich pfiffig erschien war klar, dass ich das kopieren muss. Leider habe ich vergessen, ein (schönes) Foto vond er Umhängetasche zu machen, daher hier das Instagram-Bild gleich nach Fertigstellung.

Since a backpack would rarely be used out of the reasons I described above I wanted something that could be backpack and bag at the same time, and I mean really. I mean, I didn’t want a backpack that would work as a bag, but in a rather poor way and/or vice versa. I searched online for RTW bag/backpacks and found a perfect ony from a well known brand. So I went to a store, determined to buy it and was totally disappointed. It was way to small (for me) and I looked like a toddler. Damn! Sewing accessories usually isn’t my cup of tea, but I had no choice. The only pattern I could think of that would fullfil my needs was the Cooper. And since the way the RTW bag was converted from shoulder bag to backpack seemed to be really clever, I decided to copy it. Sadly I forgot to take a (nice) picture from it as shoulder bag, so here’s the Instagram picture right after finishing.

Obwohl ich ein Fan von großen Taschen bin schien mir Cooper mit einer Breite von 41cm und einer Höhe von 38cm doch zu groß. Statt das PDF in voller Größe zu drucken habe ich den Drucker stattdessen auf  90% eingestellt – was Fertigmaße von 37cm x 34cm und eine Tiefe von 9cm ergibt.

Although I am a fan of big bags Cooper seemed to be too big with it’s 41cm width and 38cm hight. So instead of printing the PDF in full size I set the printer to 90% which makes finished measurements from 37cm x 34cm and a depth of 9cm.

Abgesehen von der Riemen-Sache habe ich noch ein paar weitere Änderungen vorgenommen. Geschlossen wird mein Rucksack mit 3 statt 2 Magnetverschlüssen, um ein Hochziehen des Deckels in der Mitte zu verhindern. Außerdem haben zwei der Innentaschen einen Druckknopf, die andere ist größer als im Schnitt und hat einen Reißverschluss. Die obere und mittlere Außentasche werden ebenfalls mit einem Druckknopf geschlossen. Außerdem gibt es ein Schlüsselband und einen Becher- & Flaschenhalter aus breitem Gummi. Und da mir die Magnetverschlüsse nicht sicher genug waren gibt es auch noch einen Reißverschluss, der den gesamten Rucksack verschließt.

Despite the strap thing I made some other modifications. The flap is closed with 3 instead of 2 magnetic closures to prevent it from pulling up in the middle. Furthermore two of the inner pockets are closed with snap buttons, the other one is slightly bigger than in the pattern and is closed with a zipper. The upper and middle outer pockets are also closed with magnetic snaps and there is a key holder and a cup & bottle holder made with a strip of wide elastic. And to add some more safety the hole bag can be closed with a zipper at the top of the lining.

Der Stoff ist wirklich toll! Gekauft habe ich ihn bei Fabricuk.com, da gewachste Baumwolle bei uns echt schwer zu bekommen ist, wie ich feststellen musste. Dieser nannte sich “Antique Waxed Cotton – Barbour Type” (klick hier) und hat eine wirklich gute Qualität. Und mit knapp £9 (also gut 11€) war er auch absolut erschwinglich. Laut Beschreibung soll das Wachs nicht auf Finger oder andere Kleidung übergehen, was ehrlich gesagt nicht ganz geklappt hat, aber meine Finger waren nur leicht schmierig und an der Maschine sieht man quasi gar nichts. Genäht habe ich mit einer 100er Jeans-Nadel, also einer eher dicken Nadel, einem weiten Stich und meinem Oberstofftransportfuß (ich liebe dieses Wort :D). Meine Maschine hat ja schon mal Probleme mit dicken, festen Stoffen und auch diemal hat sich sie sich gelegentlich schwer getan, aber sie hat es geschafft. Die Nadel hat glaube ich viel geholfen.

The fabric is great! I bought it at Fabricuk.com since waxed cotton is something you can’t find here. Really, it’s unbelievable. This one is called “Antique Waxed Cotton – Barbour Type” (find it here) and has a really nice quality. And £9 (which is something about 11€) it was affordable. The discribtion tells you that the wax won’t com off while sewing which didn’t work 100% but my hands were only slighty greasy and you can’t see anything on the sewing machine, so that’s great. I used a 100 denim needle, a longer stitch and my walking foot (this word is so much funnier in German as it’s called “outer fabric transportation foot” :D) My machine tends to have problems with thick fabric and I gave her a hard time with this one, but in the end she did it well, no complaining. I guess the thick needle really helped.

Um ehrlich zu sein gibt es trotzdem ein paar Sachen, die mich etwas an dem Rucksack stören… Zu allererst: es ist kein Leder. Ich bin normalerweise ein großer Fan von Ledertaschen und habe überlegt, diese ebenfalls aus Leder zu machen, allerdings war ich sicher, dass meine Maschine das nicht schaffen würde. Ich habe es einmal probiert, ging gar nicht. Deshalb habe ich mich für diesen Stoff entschieden, da er optisch am meisten Ähnlichkeit mit Leder hat. Zweitens ist die Öffnung etwas zu klein für meinen Geschmack. Ja ich weiß, ich habe den Rucksack kleiner gemacht, als er eigentlich ist, aber die Öffnung ist schmaler als der Rucksack an sich und ich glaube es wäre anders besser. Drittens werde ich den Riemen nochmal anpassen müssen. Leider sind die Druckknöpfe nicht stark genug und ploppen manchmal auf, wenn ich den Rucksack aufsetze. Zum Glück kann man das wenigstens leicht beheben indem ich die flachen Druckknopfhalter gegen eine kleine Schlaufe austausche.

There are however a few things that bother me about this bag… First of all, it’s not leather. I’m a huge fan of leather bags and I thought of making this one out of leather too but I was sure my machine wouldn’t be able to sew leather. I tried it once, didn’t go well. That’s why I went with this fabric as it’s look wise as close to leather as I could get. Secod thing is that the top opening is quiet small. Again, I know I made the bag smaller than usual but the opening is narrower than the bag itself and I think it would be better otherwise. Last thing is that I’ll have to adjust the straps sometimes. The snap buttons aren’t that strong and pop open sometimes while putting the bagpack on. Luckily the last one can easily be fixed by making a little loop instead of the flat button strap.

Und zum Schluss, wie im letzten Beitrag bereits, die Kostenübersicht. Die Summe sieht ziemlich schockierend aus, finde ich! Aber zwei Dineg darf man nicht vergessen. 1.) kaufe ich die Teile nie auf einen Schlag. Die Metallteile zum Beispiel habe ich schon im Dezember gekauft, den Stoff erst im März oder April. Und 2.) ist noch jede Menge gewachste Baumwolle übrig, von den Metallteilen gar nicht zu sprechen. Und eigentlich ärgert mich das, denn wenn die Stoffangabe besser wäre, hätte ich gar nicht so viel Stoff bestellen müssen. [Ja, ich habe den Rücksack 10% kleiner geamcht, als er eigentlich ist, aber auch in Originalgröße könnte ich jetzt noch mindestens einen zweiten Rucksack machen!] So wird es noch weitere Projekte mit gewachster Baumwolle geben, aber eigentlich dürfte man den vollen Preis dann hier nicht anrechnen. Naja, die Kostenübersicht ist trotzdem praktisch bzw. informativ, zumindest für mich. ;)

And finally, like with my last post, the costs. The total looks rather shocking for me! But there are two things that should be mentioned. 1.) I don’t buy all supplies at once. I bought the hardware back in December and the fabrics around March or April for example. And 2.) there is a lot of waxed cotton left over, not to mention the hardware. And that annoys me, to be honest. The instructions could be better here, than I wouldn’t have ordered so much fabric. [Yes, I made it 10% smaller than the instructions, but even in original size I would be able to make at least one more bag!] Anyway, I’m sure I will find good use for the left over waxed cotton, but technically I shouldn’t count the hole price for this project. Nevertheless, the cost overview is a good and informative thing, at least for me. ;)
