Juhu, es ist ein Mantel! :: Yeah, it’s a coat!

Was soll ich sagen, ich habe einen Mantel genäht. Mein bisher größtes und teuerstes Stück, und alles in allem bin ich sehr zufrieden! Der Schnitt ist aus der Zeitschrift ‘La Maison Victor’, die es seit kurzem auch auf deutsch gibt. Der Mantel heißt Chloë und ist auf dem Cover und ich fand ihn auf Anhieb toll. Ich suche schon länger nach dem richtigen Mantelschnitt. Alternativ stand noch der Malu Mantel von Schnittchen zur Auswahl (den ich auf jeden Fall auch nochmal testen werde), aber nachdem so viele tolle Varianten von Chloë im Internet auftauchten musste ich den probieren.

So, what can I say, I really made a coat. It’s my biggest and most expensive piece so far, and I’m pretty satisfied. The pattern is from the magazine ‘La Maison Victor‘, it’s the first time they released it in German. The coat is called Chloë and it is on the cover and I fell in love with it right off. I was looking for a coat pattern a long time now. The only other pattern I liked, too, is the Malu coat by Schnittchen (which I will definitely make next year) but there are so many wonderfull Chloës popping up all around the internet that I had to try this one first.

Nachdem ich die Schnittmusterbögen ausgeklappt hatte war ich kurz verwirrt, da die einzelnen Teile über mehrere Bögen gehen, und das kreuz und quer. Ziemlich unübersichtlich, wie ich finde, aber mit etwas Konzentration machbar. Laut Größentabelle fiel ich in Größe 38 (die Größe hab ich ewig nicht genäht geschweige denn gekauft :D ), nur an der Hüfte hätte ich Größe 40 nehmen können. Da der Mantel aber eher weit fällt und ich keinen Bademantel produzieren wollte, habe ich mich für 38 ohne Änderungen entschieden. Das war auch okay so, er passt gut. Es geht keine Fleecejacke mehr drunter, aber man muss ja auch nicht immer aussehen wie ein Michelin-Männchen…

After the first look at the pattern sheets I was a bit confused. The pattern pieces were on different sheets, totally mixed up and it really looked quite complicated. But, with a little concentration, it worked out well. The size chart told me I’m a 38 (which is a size I didn’t make for a long time :D ), only the hips were size 40. But the coat is a bit oversized and I didn’t want to make a bathrobe, so I decided to go for a straight 38 without any changes. I think that was the right decision, it fits good although I can’t wear a fleece jacket underneath (but maybe that’s not the worst, you don’t have to look like the Michelin man all the time…)

 

Der Mantel ist eigentlich ungefüttert, aber da ich mich für Walk aus Schurwolle entschieden hatte, der mir ungefüttert zu kratzig gewesen wäre, habe ich den Mantel gefüttert. Die Schnittteile für das Futter muss man selbst entwickeln, die entsprechende Anleitung dazu gibt es in der Zeitschrift. Das ist grundsätzlich super, aber leider ist die Anleitung meiner Meinung nach etwas sparsam. Ich habe lange gerätselt, ob ich das wohl richtig mache und war zwischenzeitlich sicher, dass Futter und Mantel niemals zusammen passen werden. Am Ende hat es doch geklappt, was mich wirklich überrascht hat, obwohl das Futter im Rücken etwas zu kurz ist, aber es geht. Außerdem habe ich die Ärmel verlängert, weil ein Mantel mit kurzen Ärmeln aus warmer Wolle irgendwie keinen Sinn macht.

The pattern is for an unlined coat but I decided for boiled wool which is a bit itchy without lining so I bought some viscose fabric to add a lining. The lining pieces are constructed from the normal pattern pieces, the instructions are in the magazin. That’s pretty cool, I think, but in my opinion the instructions could have been more detailed. I had some problems figuring out if I’m on the right way and I was sure that coat and lining will never match like they should. At the end everything worked out fine, which was really surprisingly for me. The lining in the back is a bit too short, but it’s okay. Also, I have extended the sleeves because a jacket with short sleeves, made out of warm wool somehow makes no sense.

 

Zusätzlich zu den verlängerten Ärmeln habe ich mich auch für richtige Knöpfe statt der vorgeschlagenen Druckknöpfe entschieden. Ich finde, dass macht irgendwie einen “fertigeren” Eindruck. Außerdem sind sie golden, muss ich noch mehr sagen?! ;) Meine Nähmaschine näht Knopflöcher automatisch und ich hatte Glück, die Knöpfe hätten nicht größer sein dürfen. Aber auch so war es etwas schwer, den dicken Walk unter den Knopflochfuß zu bekommen. Ich musste ziemlich ziehen und zerren, aber auch das hat geklappt.

In addition to the extended sleeves I decided to use normal buttons instead of the proposed push buttons. I think that creates a more “finished” look, if that makes sence. And just look at them, they are golden, do I have to say more?! ;) My sewing machine makes buttonholes automatically, and fortunately, the buttons were not larger, 3 millimeters more and I would have had bad luck. It was a bit tricky anyway, two layers of boiled wool were almost too thick to get it under the buttonhole foot, so I hade to pull and tug, but in the end it worked.

 

Da ich außer Walk und Futter keine weitere Schicht habe, ist der Mantel nicht wirklich winddicht. Er ist warm, aber für das Wetter, das wir hier im Moment haben (so um die 5°C) ist er leider nicht mehr geeignet. Ein paar Tage lang konnte ich ihn noch tragen, jetzt hängt er erstmal im Schrank und wartet auf den Frühling. Trotzdem werfe ich ihn noch bei Lindsay’s und Bella’s #coatalong ins Rennen und bin gespannt, was es da noch für tolle Mäntel zu sehen gibt. Und natürlich darf er auch beim heutigen Me Made Mittwoch nicht fehlen!

Since I have no further layer except boiled wool and lining, the coat is not really windproof. At the moment it’s something around 5°C here and that’s too cold to wear it. I had the chance to wear it some days, now it’s hanging in the closet and waiting for spring. Nevertheless, I would like to toss this into Lindsay’s and Bella’s #coatalong  and I can’t wait to see all the other gorgeous coats. (I signed up for Instagram yesterday, just for that. ;) )

 

Zu guter Letzt noch ein Nachtrag zu meinen Winter-Näh-Plänen, bei denen sich bereits die erste Änderung ergeben hat (Pläne macht man doch, um sie wieder über den Haufen zu werfen, oder!?). Der Robert Kaufmann Stoff, den ich für den Moss Skirt vorgesehen hatte, ist deutlich dünner als gedacht. Für einen Rock ist er leider nicht geeignet, also was tun mit dem Stoff und vor allem was für Stoff nun für den Moss Skirt nehmen? Immer her mit euren Ideen! Als Kompensation habe ich beim Grainline Studio Give Thanks Sale zugeschlagen und direkt drei Schnittmuster gekauft –Alder Dress, Linden Sweater und Tiny Pocket Tank– sodass ich nun noch den Linden Sweater zu meiner Winter-Liste hinzufügen kann. :)

Last but not least an addition on my Winter Sewing Plans, which I had to change for the first time (plans are made to be changed, right!?). Turns out that the Robert Kaufmann fabric is much more thinner than expected and I think it won’t work for the Moss Skirt. So, what to do with the fabric and -even more importantly– what other fabric to use for the Moss Skirt? Please help me in the comments. But luckily, I didn’t hesitate to buy three pattern in one fell at the Grainline Studio Give Thanks Sale -the Alder Dress, Linden Sweater und Tiny Pocket Tank– so I added the Linden Sweater to my winter to sew list. I’m really looking forward to make the floral one. :)
